Fabrizio Boschi, Matteo Rosselli or Jacopo Vignali (17th century) – Madonna of the Rosary
BORGO SAN LORENZO (pieve di San Lorenzo) – The large canvas, provided with its original frame, presents a scene subdivided into two parts: at the top, the Virgin with the Child is surrounded by a row of angels; at the bottom, a crowd of devotees, in the background, is accompanied by three Saints who, kneeling in front of an altar from which – amongst other things – hangs the rosary, are imploring the Virgin. These are San Carlo Borromeo, San Domenico and Santa Catherine of Siena together with two figures, probably the clients of the work. The work, provided with the theatrical, the didactic and clear exposition of the subject being treated, certainly belongs to the seventeenth century and the presence of the two Dominican saints makes the original placement within the Pieve more than likely. More problematic is the attribution of the painting, whose pictorial quality still implies an expert hand: the names of Jacopo Vignali, Matteo Rosselli and Fabrizio Boschi have been hypothesized.
