Il dipinto costituiva la parte centrale di un polittico posto su uno degli antichi altari della pieve che, rimosso nella ristrutturazione seicentesca dell’edificio, fu recuperato nell’Ottocento in un magazzino. Facevano parte dell’opera, dipinta da Bicci di Lorenzo (Firenze 1373-1452), intorno al quarto decennio del XV secolo, anche alcuni frammenti inseriti dal XVII secolo nell’altare di Sant’Agata presente nella vicina pieve.
La cornice, pregevole manufatto del XVI sec., era destinata a contenere la Madonna delle Grazie di Jacopo di Cione, conservata in pieve.
Bicci di Lorenzo, Mystical Marriage of Sant Catherine of Alexandria
The painting was the central part of a polyptic which was located on one of the antique altars of the Parish. After being removed during the restoration in the 17th century, it was later found during the 19th century in a store room. The work was painted by Bicci di Lorenzo in the fourth decade of the 15.th century, there are also a few pieces from the polyptic located in the 17th century at the altar of Sant’Agata in the Parish.
The frame, a valuable artifact from the 16th century, was destinated to hold the Lady of Graces by Iacopo di Cione, that there is in the Church.
